Understanding capital and lowercase letters helps with reading skills in several ways:

Letter recognition: Knowing capital and lowercase letters helps children recognize the different forms of each letter. Some of the letters look the same weather they are uppercase or lowercase but the letters that don’t look alike can cause difficulty. Because learning letters is the first step to read easily , children need to identify letters to understand words and sentences.

Writing skills: Learning to write capital and lowercase letters also benefits writing skills. When kiddos are able to quickly place the letters they want to use on paper, writing becomes less of a chore. When the correct letter is placed to stand for the sounds, it makes it easier for people to read a kiddo’s writing.

Tracing with alphabet books is one way I have found that helps kiddos learn the letters. Plus I add the sounds when many of the letter names are learned because let’s face it, you never know what will help it stick in a kiddo brain.

Students trace and say the letter name then they say the picture that starts with the beginning sound.

Advanced kiddos add the beginning sound after they say the picture.
