The best way to develop phonological awareness skills, can you guess the game I am referencing👉🏾 Bubble Gum Fun.
Check out how I use 1 game to hit many phonological awareness skills. These are basic skills needed to build fluent readers. I always focus more on the PA skills than the phonics.
Yes, I use the letters (phonics) to help develop this skill but it’s not the focus.

How to do phonemic awareness?
- Chose a letter card and tell the picture (cat).
- Say the beginning sound /k/ and the letter name that makes that sound (c.)
- Find the letter to color that matches the sound on the bubble gum boards.
- Ask
- “What is the beginning sound in cat?” Students: “/k/“
- “What letter says /k/ in cat?” Students “c“
- If all bubble gum circles are colored…yell, “Bubble Gum!”
How to do Segmenting
Segmenting Phonemes
If the word had 4 or less sounds, but be sure to blend the words back together.
- Segment cat- /k/ /a/ /t/ -then I say each phoneme (sound) /k/ /a/ /t/ and students say “cat.”
- Segment vest- /v/ /e/ /s/ /t/ – then I say each sound /v/ /e/ /s/ /t/ and the students say vest

Segmenting Syllables
If the word is multi-syllabic, clap the syllables.
- rabbit- 2 claps rab-bit.
- octopus- 3 claps oc-to-pus
How to work with rhyming?
1. Say the word and have everyone tell a rhyming word. Say: cat…then kiddos say hat, rat, fat, bat and even encourage “silly” words!
2. Tell the students the word chosen and another word. Students do thumbs up if they rhyme and thumbs down if they don’t rhyme
- cat-sat- Students give thumbs up
- cat-car- Students give thumbs down. If students give a thumbs up say “Rhyming words sound the same at the end so we are looking for words that say at. cat and car start with the same beginning sound.
