Reading can be challenging for kindergarten students or students with memory issues, as they often struggle with retaining and recalling chunks of information. However, successive blending offers a powerful technique to assist these students in reading more fluently. The best way to practice blending words for phonemic awareness in to practice making the sounds touch. First, start with only the first 2 sounds. Once those sounds are combined add the next sound.
How to blend unknown words for phonemic awareness?
First, I lay out the picture cards of the cvc word puzzles and the word part of the puzzle goes into a pile. Next, a student pulls a word card. The student must segment the letter sounds then make the sounds touch to read the word. Of course, having the pictures helps the student. After all, this is practice not an assessment. Finally, the student matches the picture card that was read to the image on the other half.
If you want to focus on phonemic awareness before the phonics, lay out the word cards and have the students segment the picture cards and then find the word.
These puzzles are self checking so when I add them to literacy centers, the students won’t learn incorrectly.
