May Day, celebrated on May 1st, is a wonderful opportunity to bring joy, color, and creativity into the kindergarten classroom! After all, it is traditionally a celebration of spring and new beginnings. Therefore, May Day activities can help young learners connect with nature, work together, and express themselves artistically. Here are some fun and simple ways to celebrate May Day at school with your kindergarten students:
1. Create Mini May Spring Baskets
One of the sweetest May Day traditions is making and sharing small baskets filled with flowers or treats. Provide students with colorful paper, small baskets, or paper cups, and let them decorate with stickers, ribbons, and markers. Fill the baskets with paper flowers or real blooms if available. Students can then give their baskets to classmates, teachers, or even take them home as a gift for family members.

2. Maypole Dancing
A Maypole dance can be a magical experience for little ones! Firstly, create a simple maypole by decorating a tall pole or broomstick with long, colorful ribbons or crepe paper (it’s cheaper🤣). Next, play cheerful music while teaching students an easy weaving dance around the pole. Finally, focusing on letting them move in and out in a fun, organized way. Afterall, this activity promotes teamwork, gross motor skills, and lots of giggles! For example, checkout this Maypole dace👇🏾
3. May Spring Nature Walk and Scavenger Hunt
Celebrate the beauty of spring with an outdoor nature walk. Encourage students to explore with all their senses—what they see, hear, and smell. Afterwards, gather to talk about their favorite discoveries.

Give kiddos a clip board and a pencil to quick draw things they see, hear, or smell in nature!
4. May Flower Craft Station
Set up a crafting station where students can create paper flowers, tissue paper bouquets, or handprint flower paintings. You can also integrate a simple science lesson about how flowers grow! Certainly, display their creations in the classroom for a colorful spring-themed gallery.

5. Story Time: Books and Videos About Spring
Reading is a cozy way to celebrate. During read aloud time, choose books about springtime, nature, or acts of kindness to fit the May Day spirit. After that, be sure to discuss comprehension questions. Sharing answers and what you think about stories help kiddos develop their comprehension skills.
You can also find them on Vooks, if you have an account. (Vooks is free for classroom use- Check it out here.)

6. May Spring Themed Activities
Use spring flowers centers to help practice skills. In case you are interested, here are a few of my favorite spring games and worksheets. I like to put the games out on May Day and use the worksheets all month! Hope you get a chance to check out a few so they can save you some time and effort!
Final Tips:
Keep the day joyful and flexible. Kindergarteners thrive when activities are hands-on, movement-filled, and full of bright colors. Of course, May Day is a celebration of life, growth, and kindness—just like a beautiful kindergarten classroom.
🌸 Happy May Day and Spring Fun! 🌸
