These 5 no-prep addition and subtraction math centers are a fun way to make kindergarteners love math.

1. Spill and Sort with Manipulatives
Give students a small cup of two-sided counters (or double-sided beans — my favorite low-cost manipulative). Have them spill the counters onto the table, then sort and count how many landed on each side. It’s simple, but it builds the foundation for every addition fact that follows: two parts making a whole.
2. Record What They Discover
Once students spill and sort, have them record their results on a simple sheet — coloring in beans to match what they found, then writing the matching number sentence. This is where the real learning locks in: moving from a hands-on action to a written math fact.
3. Build a Number Poster Wall
Keep a visual reference nearby showing all the ways to make each number (3 = 1+2, 2+1, 3+0, and so on). Students naturally start referencing these during independent work, which builds automaticity over time without any pressure or timed tests.
4. Practice Subtraction the Same Way
Subtraction gets far less hands-on practice time than addition in most classrooms, but the same spill-and-record method works just as well in reverse — start with a total, remove some, and record what’s left.
5. Send Practice Home
A simple parent letter explaining the activity (with a blank recording sheet included) turns a five-minute classroom center into a few extra minutes of practice at home — without any extra prep work for you.
