Reading about sharks
After creating a KWL chart about sharks, we read fiction and nonfiction books about sharks. We read fiction books during language time and practice our comprehension skills. The non-fiction happened during science time where we could add or adjust our KWL chart.
Reading and discussing something that can be scary for kiddos really helps them overcome some fears.
During technology time, kiddos could use Epic to read any shark books they choose. I like to use epic to do the research. Find www.GetEpic.com to check it out.

I always pull books from my classroom library, the school library, and I check out book from my local library to use during read aloud time and to place in our classroom library, book boxes, or for the kiddos to borrow. Yes, every year someone wants to take home some shark books.
Be sure to send home a copy of comprehension questions for parents.
Once the shark art projects were finished, kiddos had to recall on fact that was remembered about sharks. Finally, we recorded. Of course, we had to share them.

This fine motor craft was easy. First, we sponge painted a paper plate. I demonstrated how to cut triangles from a rectangle so kiddos could create teeth and fins. Lastly, the black mouth was traced using a pattern onto black paper. Then the kiddos created.
I guess you could call this STEAM instead of STEM because we started with science research then created and shark art project that used our fine motor skills.

As you can see, each part of the shark had shapes for the students to trace and cut out so it incorporated shapes! I love to incorporate math, too! Plus we used technology to present the best facts learned from the research.
Of course, I hung the completed KWL chart and shark crafts outside on the bulletin board! The kiddos loved to look at them every time we left the room.
You can check out another crafts that we did with frogs here.

Awesome job, thanks for sharing. Hailee loves to show us all the things she does in school.
You are so welcome! Sharing makes it fun!
