First, we researched sharks (just like we did with frogs) then we created cute shark art projects.
Reading about sharks
After creating a KWL chart about sharks, we read fiction and nonfiction books about sharks. Reading and discussing something that can be scary for kiddos really helps them overcome some fears. I like to use epic to do the research. Find www.GetEpic.com to check it out.
Then I pull all of my shark books to use during read aloud time and to place in our classroom library, book boxes, or for the kiddos to borrow. Yes, every year someone wants to take home some shark books. During the “reading time” I focus on comprehension but we always discuss any facts learned from the book or even incorrect facts.
Once the shark art projects were finished, kiddos had to recall on fact that was remembered about sharks. Finally, we recorded. Of course, we had to share them.
I guess you could call this STEAM instead of STEM because we started with science research then created and shark art project that used our fine motor skills. As you can see, each part of the shark had shapes for the students to trace and cut out so it incorporated shapes!
Plus we used technology to present the best facts learned from the research.
