I may have taught it but that doesn’t mean it went into their long term memory so some students need more letter and sound practice. Yes, I always ask, “Why Do THEY Need Ultimate Letter and Sound Practice?” I am so amazed at how much my students have learned so far this year! They just don’t understand when my eyes fill up with tears as they read independently…or my loud screams of excitement!
BUT…I’m amazed that learning the letters and sounds can be so difficult or cause some confusion with the letter names or sounds.
Soooo what do you have to so as a teacher…SLOW DOWN and provide opportunities for practice!
WHAT,,,how do you do that with standards and expectations!
JUST DO IT! It is so important to make decisions based on the learning of the students not on the expectations from Common Core Standards, Parents, Administrators, or other teachers! Check out other Brain Research to help kiddos learn.
Just because you have taught it, doesn’t mean it went into long term memory so practice needs to take place. When added as a game, kiddos don’t realize they are having fun. Instead of trying to teach first grade skills, play games with the standards for your grade level.
So we are going to be practicing with a fun snowflake game and 2 fun games! Oh, Yeah!
So we are going to be practicing with a fun snowflake game and 2 fun games! Oh, Yeah!
- Go Fish!
- Concentration!
Playing games isn’t a waste of class time – it’s an intelligent and purposeful use of time!
We will also just pull a letter from the mitten shape and say the letter and sound! If you get it right, you keep the snowflake! When time is up, we count the snowflakes and compare so we add math skills to a phonics game!
Here are the resources I use to make learning fun!
Thanks so much for the ideas! I truly believe that you have to slow down to speed up. Taking time for extra practice always pays off later and allows me to speed up down the stretch.
Took me years to understand that, Leah! How long for you?
These sound like great games! I bet your kids will love playing them!!!
If I say, "We are going to play a game!" a cheer arises….no matter what the activity! Thanks why I love K!
Totally agree…I used to tell parents,"If you child comes home and says we played games today, they are right…educational games!"
I'll have to remember the "educational games" part with parents! 🙂
I agree 100%! We have to follow our kids and meet their needs even if that means back-tracking or slowing down. Thanks for the reminder!
I often need reminded, too!
❤️❤️❤️Games! I use them to preview and review content!
We all love games!
