For children to understand what they read, they must be able to read words rapidly and accurately. Rapid and accurate word reading frees children to focus their attention on the meaning of what they read. Before kiddos are able to quickly read words, most importantly they have to be able to segment and blend sounds together. Staring with cvc words will eventually help kiddos read multi syllabic words.
For this reason, we practice a lot using cute no prep snowmen worksheets to practice these difficult skills.

How to Use Snowman for Developing Segmenting Skills
Basically, we segmented pictures on snowmen special snowball sound boxes! We used snowballs (cotton balls) to segment and search for sounds. As a matter of fact, easy worksheets made teacher prep easy while providing information for families when the worksheets are taken home.
How to Develop Segmenting
First, say the first sound as you move a cotton ball onto the first snowman.
Next, say the second sound and move the 2nd snowball.
Lastly, say the last sound and move the final snowball!
Afterwards, we went back and wrote the letters that stand for the sounds! So phonics was added to the phonemic awareness practice.
Finally, we practiced reading the sounds then blending the sounds to eventually saying the word! In other words, use successive blending to read the words.
Each page had a specific short vowel sound! Next, we will work on mixed vowels to help us solidly understand all the parts of a word!
