Amazing Language Experience with Scat the Cat

Amazing Language Experience Scat the Cat Teach Magically Blog

First, I told the story to the students using large pictures. Pictures help students with auditory problems remember. There was a large, colored picture for each cat.

Then we used water colors to create the pictures to match the colors from the story!  This works so much better than coloring at this time of the year!  The colors blend more easily, and it works the fine muscles in the hand because we used q-tips instead of paint brushes!

Of course I added the color words. Yes, I know that most kindergarten students can NOT read yet but adding phonics whenever I can is always important.

Once the pictures dried, the kiddos cut out the squares and put them back in order on a head band so they could practice retelling the story using their own pictures. Of course I made them use scissors because after all working those fine motor skills is a must. Grab some more fine motor ideas!

It is so much fun to watch students retell stories! We made Scat the Cat Head bands to practice retelling this fun story!

Amazing STEAM with Scat the Cat

On another day, the students made their own cat pictures using directed drawing! I love to do directed drawing to develop listening skills along with basic relational concepts that are needed to develop language skills.

They turned out so differently. Regardless they were so creative even though I walked them through the process!

Once again, water colors were used to color the picture! Then we used Chatterpix to make the cats talk which is a perfect way to add some technology skills to the day.  Then we shared with parents on Seesaw Online Learning Journal! Check out the cool rhyme!
